Do I need navigation lights on my boat?

Yes. Navigation rules require them from sunset to sunrise and in restricted visibility, such as fog or heavy rain.

What’s the difference between a stern light and an anchor light?

On most small boats, the same all-round white light does both jobs. It works with your sidelights while you’re underway and on its own while you’re at anchor.

Are portable clamp-on lights legal?

They work well for small boats, kayaks and tenders that don’t have built-in wiring. Check the visibility rating against the requirements for your boat’s length.
